God vs. Hello Kitty

Last night I went to dinner at Eats with some friends. On the way in we saw what I would have called the ugliest car I have ever seen. It had Hello Kitty graphics all over the car, Hello Kitty seat covers, Hello Kitty rim caps, Hello Kitty everything, and across the rear of the car was a graphic that said “Here Kitty Kitty!”. The car was hideous, but it made me think. What do I love so much that I want everything I do to be branded with? Is it X-men comics, or wood working, or even Jesus? Do I love god enough to brand everything I do, everything I have with his name? Not that I’m promoting wearing the Jesus shirt everyday and being obnoxious, but do we love god enough that we would gladly take all that we have, and make it proclaim his name.

Colored People in a Tainted Place

Should multi-ethnic/multi-racial/etc churches be the ideal or something that we should truly strive for as a method of church, or simply allow it to be a byproduct of the church just doing its thing, or is it something that will just eventually get reconciled when Christ returns?

The Image of God

What does it actually mean to be created in God’s image? Do we physically look like god? Do we spiritually look like god?

Sola Gospel

Is there any one gospel? Do we just have a bunch of incomplete understandings of the gospel or are there different gospels? Does contextualization in communicating the gospel make it more than one?

can love be understood?

in a recent audio post by donald miller, he suggests that we cannot fully understand love, but we can experience it. he says that God created love as a metaphor, sort of like light… we can examine it, but cannot fully comprehend it.  he further suggests that without love we would die, and because our desire for love is so great we will do anything to feel it.  he points out that we do not have the ability to validate ourselves, that our worth comes from the way we are seen by others, that we will try to win the validation of others at all costs.  because without that validation we will die. can we understand love or only experience it?

How much is our effectiveness for God contingent on our obedience to God?

Resurrection of the Body

So, I am currently interested in NT Wright’s new book that deals with the topic of the resurrection of the body and heaven. It is definitely raising a few questions that I want to get to the bottom of, but I wanted to see some of ya’lls opinions. So… what does happen when you die? Are you immediately swept up into heaven? Is there some kind of transition state? Do we ever actually end up in some sky-like heaven or does heaven come here and we simply live heaven on earth? What about our bodies? Do we keep the ones we have? Do we get new ones, or do the old ones simply get better? Any thoughts on all this?

different vs. better

a few guys on our staff recently attended a lunch with Leonard Sweet (author/futurist/professor) who said that in his opinion churches should be trying to be different than each other not better than each other.  he wasn’t referring to theological differences, but methodology and approach to reaching the lost.  what are your thoughts on how this plays out not only for organizations but individuals?  one example is the nintendo wii… it is not better than the xbox 360 or the playstation 3, in many ways it is inferior to those gaming platforms, but it is different.  so different that its sales were through the roof for a second christmas shopping season and nintendo can’t keep up with the demand for wii platforms.  Sweet would say this is the perfect example of being different instead of trying for better.  while sony and microsoft fight for the top rank in the gaming market, nintendo slides their product into the mix (at half the price) and walks away the biggest winner in this last flurry of  consumer “got-to-have-it-ism” different vs better?  what do you think?
